Yellow fever

What is yellow fever?

Yellow fever is a virus which causes high fever, headache, muscle pain, nose bleeds, nausea and sickness. In rare cases, it can lead to jaundice, bleeding and reduced urinary secretion due to damage to the liver and kidneys. In those cases, the illness could even be fatal.

There is no treatment for yellow fever itself, only to relieve the symptoms. The yellow fever virus is transmitted via mosquitoes. It takes 3 to 6 days for symptoms to appear following the infection. The disease is only found in the tropical regions of Africa and South America. Those travelling in these countries should certainly be vaccinated against yellow fever prior to travelling. The vaccination almost always provides lifelong protection.

Only vaccination centres with special authorisation may issue a vaccination certificate, which is recognised internationally. One example in Vienna is the Town Town vaccination centre. The yellow fever vaccination cannot be given by local health authorities!

All approved yellow fever vaccination centers can be found here.
